Valley of the Sun Juneteenth Celebration Cancelled For 2020

To combat COVID-19, the Festival Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Juneteenth Festival at Eastlake Park in Phoenix.

The Valley of the Sun Juneteenth Festival slated for June 13 has been cancelled because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty about the return of large public gatherings. Festival organizers announced the decision early May.

While Juneteenth draws thousands of attendees each year, the health and safety of our attendees, volunteers and community partners is our highest priority. The heart of our decision is centered on you, our Festival attendees, and ensuring we can collectively remain strong and connected in the years ahead.

We are excited to announce the date for 2021. Please mark your calendar for June 19, 2021. But also stay tuned for announcements of some virtual programming so as not let 2020 pass without celebrating this historic event. Until then, stay safe and stay healthy! For questions or concerns, please contact info@phxjuneteenth.com.

The Juneteenth Celebration commemorates the date – June 19, 1865 – when the slaves in Galveston, Texas, first received word of the Emancipation Proclamation abolishing slavery, which was originally issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.

You can still show your support by ordering a Juneteenth T-shirt! Check back soon for when we will have these on sale.
